The Waiting

It has been, in the sense of the old Chinese curse, an interesting weekend.
The earthquake and tsunami that struck north-eastern Japan on Friday and the subsequent nuclear crisis are frightening events that hit very, very close to home for me and mine.
As many of you know, I spent many years in Japan and Mrs. Rev. Paperboy is a Japanese national. Furthermore, Sendai is pretty much her hometown and her parents live in a nearby village in Miyagi Prefecture, well inland from the city. Neither of us has had much sleep since Friday and we still have not received any word about her parents.
We are grateful for the outpouring of concern among friends and family and we thank you for your emails, phone calls, tweets, visits and other expressions of support. Pardon us if we don't respond swiftly or at all for the moment, we appreciate your kindness.
But we are still waiting.
At the moment there is still no electricity or telephone service in the affected area and we are still trying constantly to get through via telephone and email to our family there. Meanwhile, we are doing our best to keep calm and carry on.

The best thing you can do to help us right now is give money to the Red Cross (click the link or text the word ASIA to 30333 to make a one-time donation of $5) or go out and give blood.

My very best wishes to you and your family during this terrible time. I hope all is well, but I can only imagine what the waiting must be like.

Hey Kev, my thoughts are with you and yours. I hope you get good news soon for your family and for the many families in and out of Japan sitting this vigil of worry.

My hopes and thoughts are with you Rev. The waiting without knowing can be the worst part. Lets hope the news is good and the situation in Japan improves

Donation sent. Similar to JJ, I too thought of your in-laws and friends in Japan. May all be well.

Hey, Rev. I've been off the SL grid for quite awhile now, but I saw your comment on FB today. I hope everything turns out ok for the family in Japan. Stay strong. I hope to run into you one of these days in SL or elsewhere. Going to NN11 in Minneapolis? I'm planning on going again (yes, I'm out of my mind).

All the best,

Hey, Rev. I saw your comment on FB just now. You and your family are in my thoughts. I hope they were far enough inland to have avoided the worst of it. I know, there are some pretty daunting problems in the aftermath. Stay strong.

I've been off the grid for quite awhile in SL (IF Mastroianni), but I hope to run into you one of these days, if not in SL. Are you going to NN11 in June? I'm going (yes, I'm insane).

All the best,

Words seem pretty useless when people are going through what you are, but I offer my heartfelt condolences to you and yours and hope the waiting ends for you ASAP. May your loved ones be safe and sound.

Hi Rev,
May good fortune be yours when the wait is over.

You and Hiromi and the kids have Takeshi's and my sympathy in an awfully difficult situation. If there's anything we can do to help out on this end, please let us know. Good luck.

I gave up praying a long time ago. I will think good thoughts, works just as well in my experience. Good luck.

Darn, I was hoping this wouldn't be the case for you, that your family would dodge any problems. I'm sorry you have to wait and worry. My thoughts are with you and yours.

Hey, rev, I was thinking of you and thought 'he's back in Canada' but I never even thought of your in-laws. I hope, of course that all will be well for them. For what it's worth, a friend of mine who lives in Fukushima took off with his wife over the mountains to his in-laws place before the first reactor blew and the only reason most of his friends know is that he managed to get a quick email off to a friend who then posted it to facebook for him. Communications are quite apparently pretty impossible. I hope all will be well.
