the terrorists won

Apparently all it takes is an airline passenger eating a dodgy burrito before the flight or a couple joining the mile-high club to make NORAD shit its pants. Given what it costs to scramble an F-16 and have it fly from Denver to New York, al-Quaida could probably bankrupt the United States by slipping some Ex-Lax into the coffee urn at the Starbucks at O'Hare Airport every couple of weeks.

Was that the threat that we were supposed to expect during the "ceremonies"? I guess you can never be too safe.

9-11 style hijackings became a thing of the past on, well, 9-12. The immediate change was passengers would no longer assume they would survive a hijacking, so they will attack any hijacker. Within the following weeks, all airlines reinforced the cockpit doors and made it mandatory to keep said doors closed. So taking over the plane has become virtually impossible. All subsequent attacks have been attempts to cause planes to crash by shoe or underwear bombs, not flying them into buildings.
The other significant measure was 100% screening of all baggage, checked or not.

Lib supporter - as usual, we are fighting the current war with the tactics of the last war. It's heavy calvary horse-and-sabre charges against machine guns all over again.
I remember flying when I was a kid in the 70s when they would take you up to the see the cockpit midflight. The security check - a recent innovation back then - usually consisted of asking you if you were carrying any weapons or explosives. The use of metal detectors didn't come until a few years later, after the PLO started skyjacking planes. I expect that in my lifetime we will see passengers locked into their seats for the flight.
